Option A: Custodial wallet (easiest)
- Go to a major exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance)
- Sign up with your email
- Complete identity verification (KYC) — usually a photo ID and selfie
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) — use an authenticator app, not SMS
- Done. Your wallet is the exchange account.
This is the path most beginners take, and it's perfectly fine for learning. The exchange manages security, and you have a support team if something goes wrong.
Option B: Non-custodial wallet (MetaMask)
- Install MetaMask from the official website (metamask.io). Verify the URL — phishing sites exist.
- Create a new wallet. MetaMask generates your seed phrase — 12 words.
- Write down your seed phrase on paper. Not a screenshot. Not a note app. Physical paper.
- Verify the phrase. MetaMask asks you to confirm the words in order.
- Set a strong password for the browser extension.
- Done. Your wallet address (starting with 0x) is now visible.
Option C: Hardware wallet (most secure)
- Buy from the official store — Ledger or Trezor. Never buy from third parties (they could be pre-loaded with known seed phrases).
- Unbox and connect to your computer via USB.
- Follow the setup wizard. The device generates a 24-word seed phrase.
- Write down the seed phrase on the provided card. Store it securely.
- Set a PIN on the device.
- Connect to MetaMask or Ledger Live for day-to-day use.
Critical security steps regardless of type
- Enable 2FA everywhere. Use Google Authenticator or Authy. Never rely on SMS-based 2FA.
- Use a unique email. Create a dedicated email for crypto that you don't use for anything else.
- Bookmark official sites. Don't Google "MetaMask" or "Uniswap" — use bookmarks. Phishing ads appear at the top of search results regularly.
- Start with small amounts. Send a tiny test transaction before moving significant funds.
- Never share your seed phrase. No legitimate service will ever ask for it.
